By the Numbers

  • Around 30 bottle top lids diverted in every 4-pack
  • 100% recycled plastic. No virgin materials, no added dyes
  • One-of-a-kind, every single coaster

The Problem: Most Coasters Are Made to Be Replaced

Cork frays. MDF swells. Acrylic cracks. Most coasters end up in the bin within a year, and most of those head straight to landfill because their material mix makes them impossible to recycle.

Then there is the lid problem. Australians toss billions of bottle top lids every year because they are too small for kerbside recycling. Even when the bottle gets recycled, the lid does not.

So we built a coaster that solves both. Recycled lids in. Beautiful homewares out. Built to last on your coffee table for years, recyclable through BRAD when it eventually retires.

From Bottle Top to Coffee Table: How Your Coasters Are Made

1. Collect. Australians drop off bottle top lids at Banish or post them through the BRAD Pre-Paid Program. Tens of thousands every month.

2. Sort. Volunteers hand-sort every lid by colour and plastic type at our Sydney workshop. The mix you choose is what creates your colourway. (Fun fact: the deepest blues come from full-cream milk lids.)

3. Shred. We shred the lids in our in-house shredder, ready for moulding.

4. Handcraft. Each coaster is pressed, cooled, and finished by hand at Central Station in Sydney. The result is a 10cm round coaster with a 6mm depth, swirling colours, and a story you can hold.

Why These Coasters: Not Just Sustainable. Actually Better.

Built for daily use. Holds hot mugs, cold drinks, and everything in between. Dishwasher safe, heat resistant up to standard hot beverage temperatures, and easy to wipe down.

Every coaster is one-of-a-kind. The colours come from the original lids. No dyes added. Your set will never be replicated, which means it doubles as conversation art.

Made at Central Station, Sydney. Handcrafted in our sustainability hub. Supporting local jobs and recycling innovation, not an overseas factory.

Built to be given. The 4-pack and 6-pack land naturally in gift territory. Wrapped in zero-waste packaging, ready for housewarmings, birthdays, or thank-yous.

Where They Live: Four Rooms, One Coaster

The living room. On the coffee table beside your morning coffee. Holds wine glasses without leaving rings.

The dining table. A 6-pack lays out for dinner parties. Heat-resistant, easy to wipe between courses.

The outdoor setting. Weather-resistant and won't warp in the sun like cork. Perfect for the deck, the picnic, or the barbecue.

The office desk. Practical for the mug, beautiful enough that clients ask about it during meetings.

Ready to set the table with something that means something? Every 4-pack diverts around 30 bottle tops from landfill.

Good Questions. Straight Answers.

Are these coasters heat-resistant?

Yes for everyday use. They handle hot mugs, teapots, and serving dishes at standard hot-beverage temperatures (up to around 90°C). They are not rated for direct contact with cookware fresh off the stove or oven.

Are they dishwasher safe?

Yes, top rack. We have customers using theirs in the dishwasher weekly with no warping or fading.

What size are they and what fits on them?

Each coaster is 10cm diameter × 6mm thick. They comfortably hold standard mugs, wine glasses, water glasses, and small serving bowls.

Will my set look exactly like the photo?

The Standard Mixed Set has consistent colours, but the swirling patterns vary slightly because each coaster is handmade. Lucky Dip is intentionally a surprise mix. Single-colour sets ship with a tight tolerance on the base colour.

Why are they more expensive than generic coasters?

Each coaster is individually handmade in Sydney from locally collected recycled plastic. You are paying for circular manufacturing, not a mass-produced import. Every purchase also directly funds the BRAD recycling program.

Are they suitable for outdoor use?

Yes. Unlike cork or MDF, they will not warp in the sun, swell in the rain, or fade quickly. Perfect for deck, picnic, or outdoor dining tables.

Can I order custom colours or bulk for my workplace or event?

Yes. For orders of 100 or more, email hello@banish.com.au for custom colour mixes, branded packaging discussions, and bulk pricing.

Every Coaster Tells a Story. What Will Yours Hold?

A handmade set of coasters. Around 30 bottle tops diverted from landfill per 4-pack. A coffee table, a dinner party, or a gift that gives twice.
