It's arguably one of the jolliest times of the year. In Australia, the sun is out and it is the perfect reason to catch-up with friends and family. But it is also the time of year when we spend and waste the most. Here's how you can have double the fun and halve your waste.
1. Use newspaper instead of wrapping paper - use tight folds (to minimise the amount of sticky tape you need) and use paper and ribbons you've collected from previous presents instead.
2. Gift wisely - choose presents with purpose rather than a present for the sake of giving something. The recipient will thank you and so will the planet.
3. Party-wise - it’s the season to be jolly and celebrate but if possible try and avoid buying single-use cutlery and plates. Instead? Use old jars and do the washing up the good old-fashioned way.
4. Light up your life - with solar powered lights rather than zapping power and costing you money.
5. Plan it out - have a plan and stick to it. Before you head to do your Christmas grocery shop make sure you have a list with quantities of exactly what you need to eliminate food waste.
6. Shop local - support your neighbours. This also means less freight and shipping emissions.
7. Love leftovers - stuffed like your turkey? You might not feel like ever eating it again but freeze your leftovers for a new day and create innovative recipes.
8. Donate - let's be honest each year you’ll get at least one present that you will never use. If you don’t have the guts to ask for the receipt, extend the giving and donate it to someone who will love it.at the end of the day wouldn’t your loved one prefer someone be enjoying your present rather than it collecting dust.
9. Make your own - show love through labour and make something that your loved ones will enjoy. For example shortbread, chutneys or something with wood.
10. Set the limits - within a group of friends or family set a limit of how many presents you give. This helps save money but also helps avoid unwanted presents going to waste.
